And now, a story:

So, earlier today, I decided to switch on crossfire. (I usually run with it off, for reasons). After the screen fished flickering, I went to select my gaming preset on the AMD status panel thing (I forget the exact name, it has a bunch of slider bars that let you adjust your clock rate, or fan speed). I guess I tried to hit it too soon after switching crossfire on, because the bars went crazy for a second, and I got a bunch of error windows with the title "FAIL" and text like "call_fan_speed" with numbers.

Otherwise, my system was fine, and I thought nothing of it. I then switched off my machine and restarted it. (I do this every time I toggle crossfire. I'm sure it's unnecessary, but i do it).

This is where I encountered my problem. I have the AMD panel with my presets set to come up automaticly when my computer turns on. It pops up a few moments after the boot up ends (when I'm staring at my desktop). This time, right when panel was supposed to come up, this happened:

If you can't see, those are many many green bars running from the top of the screen to the bottom.

The machine does not respond to commands in this state, I have to hold power to kill it.

This happens every time I restart in normal mode, right when the AMD panel should have popped up. (The boot up happens normally otherwise, I even get to see the desktop for a few seconds).

I CAN start in safe mode, and this does not happen. So if you know how to disable the AMD pop up from there, please let me know. (I can't figure it out).

I have tried restarting nealry a dozen times. The screen alternated between a solid color and bars during those restarts, and went through several colors before simply turning black on the last few.

The AMD forums are down, and I have no idea what's wrong. I got this computer 5 months ago, and would really like it if it is salvageable. Thanks in advance!

System completely broken, don't know how/what to do 2014/08/11 16:41:09 (permalink)

Hello libbmaster and welcome to the AVADirect forums!

I'm sorry that your first post had to be a negative experience, but I'm hoping that I can provide some advice on how to get the problem fixed, or at least get your computer up and running. It sounds like the computer is not completely broken and it's just a matter of getting the video showing correctly. The good thing is, having two video cards can help with the issue in case one is defective it can be temporarily removed and replaced while you still get to maintain the usability of the system.

For starts, it appears like the video signal is scrambled. This is usually a byproduct of few possible problems. Faulty video cards, faulty cables and faulty monitors can all be causing this kind of an issue. On rare occasions, it can also be a culprit with the software or the driver, however this is usually unlikely unless you've modified the configuration.

So now let's break down some of the troubleshooting you've already done to determine what could be wrong. You stated that in safe mode, this does not occur and your PC is accessible, you get display. Surely, the resolution is probably huge as safe mode uses basic video driver.

This means that the monitor and cables are fine and they're receiving the signal. Therefore the issue may be with the video card(s) or perhaps with the driver.

The driver problems can be fixed relatively quickly by simply booting the system up in safe mode, going to device manager, expanding the Display Adapters, right clicking on the AMD adapter and choosing Uninstall. If the dialog box comes up asking to remove software along with the driver, make sure that you check it and click OK. After this is done, reboot your computer and it should go to normal mode (although resolution will still be off). Then, you can go on the internet and download the latest driver from AMD. Install the driver and you should be good to go. If the installation of the driver is unsuccessful or the issue comes back as soon as the driver is installed, then the problem is likely with the video card. It is however unlikely that both cards are causing the problem. Check to make sure you're getting the latest driver from AMD and if the issue persists, I would also try to go one version back.

In such scenario, it is highly recommended to remove the 2nd card and just try using the primary. If the issue persists, you can swap out the cards and see how the system behaves with the other unit. Usually, the issue will follow just one card and when you install the other one it will likely go away. Once you've determined this, we can then look at options of replacing the faulty card.

If the issue turns out to be related to just the driver, then I would try to enable crossfire one more time. It would be interesting to see if somehow just enabling crossfire causes this problem to start. Perhaps the bridge may need to be replaced or one card is simply causing all the issues and won't run in crossfire anymore.

    Hey libbmaster,

We got your email and I've responded back, but I'm doing it here for the sake of other viewers checking in on the thread. This can be useful in case anyone reads this with a similar problem like yours.

I'm glad to hear you got the issue resolved. It's nice to know that the only problem was software related and that your hardware is OK. Most of the time I avoid using any kind of GPU tweak programs as they can be dangerous and can sometimes even damage the hardware. MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision are the most reliable GPU Tools you can use, but they can also cause problems if used improperly.

Hopefully, everything should be back to normal now and your system is functioning. Should the issue come back or you experience any graphical problems or problems with the crossfire, let us know and we'll help you diagnose it.

    Kind regards,
    Guest
