Just as many of us were getting used to the idea of USB 3.0 and Sata III, Intel lets us know what real speed is. The new Silicon Photonics Link uses what could pass for fishing line to transmit 5 times as much data as the fastest copper wires. What does this mean for realworld performance? It means transfering "a high definition movie from iTunes in one second, or to transfer 1,000 high-resolution digital photos in a second, or send 100 hours of music in a second, or to send 45 million Tweets." And it can do all this without costing a fortune like current Fiberoptic technology, bringing mainframe like speeds into the mainstream. Intel looks to bring the SPL to market within five years, but heres hoping it can speed things up in more ways than one.
