Upgrading AVA Desktop to Window 8

I'm considering upgrading my AVA Desktop to Windows 8 and have a question. I ran the Win 8 Upgrade Assistant and among other things it flagged that I would need to install newer versions of ATI Catalyst Control Center and ATI Catalyst Install Manager. I checked the AMD site and found there's a new version of the Catalyst software suite, v12.10, that provides Windows 8 compatibility for 64-bit systems. So, would installing v12.10 update both the Control Center and Install Manager appropriately; that is, would this upgrade satisfy Windows 8? For reference I have a AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series video card.

Another question is about the update logistics. Would I install the Win 8 upgrade and when its done then install the Catalyst software update or do I do the Catalyst install first and then the Win 8 upgrade? I'm concerned about upgrading Win 8 first and then finding I have no video working since I'd have the old video drivers installed.

Any info is appreciated.

Hello jibjab and welcome to our forum!

According to AMD's website, updating to their latest software package would assist in running both the display drivers and Catalyst Control Center in a Windows 8 environment successfully. This is recommend, per AMD, to ensure the card operates to it's fullest, and all extra features within Windows 8 are accessible.

Before you update any drivers, or software, in light of the Windows 8 upgrade you want to first upgrade to Windows 8, then the drivers. Anytime you upgrade an operating system is refreshes the Windows registry with the new operating system architecture. Updating drivers before hand could make the situation complex for your registry and cause little errors here and there. What I recommend doing, to make the situation easier for you, is first download all the Windows 8 drivers you need. Then, burn them to a disc or place them on a USB thumb drive. Upgrade to Windows 8, and then reference the media you loaded the downloaded drivers on and install them. That should have you up and running in no time.

Thanks for the tips Joesph. As far as I know the only drivers flagged by the upgrade assistant were the AMD drivers. So, if I have the Catalyst update package on some external media, then I presumably could perform the Win 8 upgrade and then after run the Catalyst installer to update the AMD drivers on top of Win 8. Does this sound like it'd work?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello jibjab,

That process should work fine. Keep in mind that in order for a successful upgrade your current system should be running in the top notch condition. If you have viruses or other issues with your system, these might interfere with the upgrade process.

I usually recommend clean installs, rather than upgrades, because no matter how seamless they try to make them, there's always some kind of issues. Most common issue at the moment is the upgrade process hanging up at a certain percentage, usually early on like 10-25% completion.

Perform full virus scans, malware scans and all windows and driver updates before you move onto the upgrade, to make sure everything is tip top. Microsoft Security Essentials is good for making sure your system is clean of viruses and Malwarebytes is a good program that will eliminate most of the malware out there that could cause potential problems.
