Topic: Radeon 5870 stock & 5970 release?Posted: 17 Nov 2009 at 10:55pm |

Ok, so I plan to order a new system by the end of the month most likely. I have been comparing between a few builds here at AVA, as well as MainGear, VelocityMicro, and DigitalStorm. So far, AVA looks like the heavyweight king on price and quality. However, I have a couple of questions/concerns on the GPU end.
1.) I have been hesitant to buy just yet with Hemlock (Radeon 5970 / 5870x2) rumored to be releasing either this week or next. Should it arrive before the end of November, I would like to get a pair of those in Xfire. Given that AMD is very tight lipped about the release so far, I am sure the guys at AVA couldn't say anything even if you are uncrating them as I write this. Still, if anyone has credible information that a November release is still likely, I would not mind a subtle, purely speculative hint... ![]() More importantly, when they do arrive, is there any idea what kind of stock you will be able to get? I have heard that there may be a significant shortage when it ships. My fear is that they will all be sold out before I can finish placing my order. ![]() 2.) Should R5970 be delayed until late Dec or supply shortages make getting a pair of them impossible, I would probably just save the money and go with an R5870 then upgrade to Fermi sometime next year if it is as good as nVidia so desperately wants us to believe. However, I noticed that the Radeon 5870's were no longer available on the custom build pages. The 5770's are available, but the 5870's are missing. Is AVA all out of stock on those? If so, is there a projected date when more stock will arrive? Any help or info from users or staff would be greatly appreciated. |

Hello aocvirek,
We have heard Rumor that the new Radeon HD card would not be released until December.
As long as you place your order ASAP, once they are offered on our website, we will work diligently to source and secure the card for your order.
We were also hinted at the fact that the 5800 series is not more...sometimes manufacturers say such things to push more recent products, but in the event that this is true I would not rely on those cards.
The 5800 series is no more, as of recent...we will keep you updated on the stock status once we receive more reliable information.
Should you have additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to respond to this thread, or send me an email.
Kind Regards,
|

Thanks Joseph, that was quite helpful.
I can't say I am too surprised that ATI has cut the 5800 line. With the economy like it is, the lower cost 5700's probably sell much better, and the enthusiasts are probably waiting for Hemlock (like me!). Since those are finished, I will definitely wait for the 5900 release. As far as the December release goes, I think that sounds reasonable for the 5900. It will give me a few more weeks to pad my budget anyway! Speaking of money, any idea for the price point on the 5900's? Rumor has them a hair shy of $500.00 but that seems a little low with GTX295's still running $600+. I have been budgeting on ~$600ish a piece for 2 cards = $1200 give or take a few bucks. Do you think I am on the right track with that, or do you think I should be expecting higher, or lower? By the way. Given my prior experience with your competitors, I was fully expecting to be ignored, or given a cookie cutter "please call the sales department for ordering info" reply. Thanks again for taking the time to actually read my questions and respond. (I know, I get long winded. )- EDIT - I just noticed several hardware site reviews and benchmarks stating that R5970 has just been released. According to ATI's company website, it is official. I will have to keep checking back here to see when you are able to get stock. A lot of the sites were alluding to severe die shortages potentially hampering availability. Hello aocvirek,
It is my pleasure to assist and answer all of your questions.
What separates us from our competitors is the simple fact that "cookie cutter" replies and notifications do not exist with us. We are human beings, just like you, with a job to do. We enjoy personalizing the experience for every customer, and will continue to do so because us as Americans appreciate that little "extra mile".
You are correct, we have received word that ATI launched the 5900 series cards. Resellers have already begun posting this card everywhere, so we will do the same.
We are told they will be available within the next 48 hours.
It looks like you may be closer to your purchase than you think. :-)
Should you have additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reply or send me an email.
Kind Regards,
|

Hay pdwe,
From all the site reviews I have seen so far, it blows the doors off the GTX295 quite handily, and that is at stock settings. The single GPU 5870 was typically just a step behind, and this one is capable of almost double the performance. Here are a couple of points I got from the reviews so far: 1.) Highly Overclockable: - Unusually, ATI actually promotes overclocking of the card. Apparently, they had to down-clock to 750mgz so that it consumes less than 300w, otherwise the card is non-compliant. However, the dice are apparently selected from the best performing of the Cypress lot they could fish out. Word has it that ATI fully expects to hit 850mgz per core. Ananadtech tried, but encountered some throttling issues. Possibly related to power supply and voltage regulation, possibly due to early release drivers (Its ATI afterall), or possibly the card isn't quite able to handle that. Still, take a look at the benchmarks. It is a beast. 2.) The cooling system is not a lame fan. - A lot of people were complaining about it having one lame fan that could never dissipate all the heat. Apparently, the reference includes a VaporX style vapor chamber in the stock reference card. It is designed to dissipate 400w, not the 300w the card is down-clocked to. 3.) If the 3 monitor thing seems cool to you, this one can hack it. Anything short of Crysis at 2590x1200 with full settings gets tossed around by this thing so easily, 3 monitors at high res isn't a problem. Looks like it will live up to the hype afterall. Especially after the drivers mature, and the throttling issue can be resolved. Looking forward to seeing the CrossFireX benchmarks on it now. Can't wait until AVA gets stock! ![]() |

Looks like 5970 will hit newegg on 12/8 might be soon after these cards will be available at AVA for anyone considering one or two or some lucky souls three.

No, only 2 are supported in Quad Xfire I think. Sadly, I doubt we will ever see a 3 or 4 card, 6/8 GPU setup. Though, that would be ridiculous. Plus, with 300w per card, it would really push PSU limits.
We shall see when AVA gets stock. With all the problems TSMC is having getting dice out, 12/8 might be optimistic. It could be a bit longer, especially if you have 2 on order. ![]() We will see how AMD's promise of 10x more production in the coming weeks pans out... |

Yeah I never thought about the supply issue might be tough to get 2 of the 5970 cards at release.

Well, frankly it's almost impossible to get 1 right now. Everyone sold out in a matter of minutes or hours, and there were not many to begin with given all the pre-orders. Unless you are willing to pay some price hiker $1200.00 a piece on ebay, it will probably be several weeks before honest retailers can get more.
I just hope TSMC can get their act together so I can get my system built. I mean, come on, they have had over a year worth of production cycle to iron out the 40nm process. 40% yeald at this stage is unfathomable for a company of that size and reputation.

The question is would AVA allow customers who have their rigs in for an upgrade to store their systems til they can get supply of these cards.

Hello Gentleman,
We are currently taking pre-orders on systems, that include the 5800 & 5900 ATI HD Radeon cards. We are still uncertain when they will become available, but we are more than happy to hold your order until we are able to get our hands on them.
Should you have additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at your convenience.
Kind Regards,

Shockingly, Newegg showed ETA on Sapphire for 12/15, and it actually shows stock! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102863
In fact, it has shown availability for quite some time. Could it be that AMD's promise of increasing availability may actually come true? Considering this is the first time in weeks I have even heard of a retailer getting a shipment, much less having availability for more than 5 minutes, the excitement is probably premature, but still, there is hope! Hello aocvirek,
There is most-definitely hope! We have been securing stock of the Sapphire cards ever since Newegg.com has shown stock.
I think our worries of the "limited-stock" days are over.
Kind Regards,

Fantastic!
That is great to hear Joe. You just brightened an otherwise frustrating month with that news. I wasn't expecting any progress on availability until January at least, given all the news I was hearing around the net. I will be elated at first word that my build is under construction. Until then, Merry Christmas, and enjoy the coming weekend! Edited by aocvirek - 18 Dec 2009 at 9:28am |
