After countless combinations,this is what I've come up with for a final build.A bit over the target price,but I don't want to play it cheap and regret it later.

    What are peoples thoughts on getting 2xGB sticks of RAM instead of 4x1GB?  This would allow you further expansion to 8GB since you are running 64 bit OS.
     
    Just a thought, any others agree with me?

    Looks like a nice build, but I think you need to change a few options for a faster system.  There are three places where I can spot some slowdowns.
     
    INTEL, Core™ 2 Quad Q6700 Quad-Core 2.66GHz, 1066MHz FSB
    ABIT, IP35 Pro, LGA775, Intel P35, 1333MHz FSB, DDR2-800
    CORSAIR, 4GB (4 x 1GB) XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500 DDR2 1066MHz
     
    I think you now see what the problem is here.  Neither the FSB or Memory Bus speeds match.  The first thing to note about a computer system is that the buses only run as fast as the slowest part.  This means that your mobo FSB will only run at 1066 MHz and your memory will only run 800 MHz.
     
    Here are the suggestions and then I will tell you why.
     
    INTEL, Core™ 2 Quad Q9300 Quad-Core 2.50GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 6MB (2 x 3MB) L2 Cache, 45nm, 95W, EM64T EIST VT XD, Retail -$9
     
    ASUS, P5K-E, LGA775, Intel P35, 1333MHz FSB, DDR2-1066MHz 8GB /4, PCIe x16 /2 CF, SATA 3Gb/s RAID 5 /6, HDA, GbLAN, FW /2, ATX, Retail -$50
     
    Keep same memory.
     
    Ok, you will notice that the processor speed is slightly slower.  But this chip is from the newer Intel Quad family called "Yorkfield".  The older one is from family "Kentsfield".  Even slightly slower, it offers about a 10% speed increase.  So by dropping the speed and upping the FSB rating to match the mobo, it will work much more effectively.
     
    I also changed the mobo to accept your faster ram.  ASUS is also one of the top mobo makers.  I dont know if you prefer ABIT or anything.  If you would like to keep your same mobo though, choose some DDR2-800 ram and save yourself a few bucks.

    The 2 GB modules do not allow 1066 bus speeds.  The highest they are rated for is 800 MHz.  While yes it would leave room for upgrading to more memory, at the moment, this is the only way to get the most speed out of DDR2 memory without going to DDR3.

    I chose the Abit based on the glowing reviews I've seen,it seems to be the best of the P35 boards.Asus boards seem to get mixed reviews.I was considering the Abit X38 board,which would have the higher speed,but I haven't seen it in the configurator.
    I've heard the Yorkfields don't overclock quite as well as the older models,would there be a noticeable difference in the best stable overclock speed between the Q9300 and  Q6700?

    I do not know about the differences in overclock, that might be best found in a google search.  However call up joe or email him, and we can add the ABit X38 board to your system in no time.

    You will notice that the timings are slightly lower 5-5-5-15 compared to the OCZ 5-5-5-18.  This is due in fact to the smaller ram size which means that the on-chip conntroller has less ram to search through, giving slightly better timings.

    I did some more research on IP35Pro,although it officially supports up to 800 DDR2,it actually will run 1066 DDR2 without any problems.But the overall opinion I've gotten is that the Q6700 doesn't need more than 800 DDR2  to achieve high overclocks due to it's multiplier(it has a 10 multiplier compared to 7.5 on the Q9300). So I just have to pick out some good 800 ram.

    Your right on that.  A FSB of 1066 MHz = 266 MHz qdr (quad data rate).  Use the multiplier of 10 and you get processor speed of 2.66 GHz.  The FSB is 64 bits wide so your bandwidth is 8.5 GB/s
     
    If you choose DDR2-800 ram, you will really run the ram at 400 MHz ddr (double data rate).  So your memory bus will have a bandwidth of 6.4 GB/s (single-channel).  But since you are getting dual-channel memory, we effectively widen the bus from 64 bits to 128 bits.  So your total memory bandwidth is 12.8 GB/s.
     
    Unless you were to overclock the processor to 4.0 GHz (10 mult x 400 FSB = 12.8 GB/s), DDR2-800 memory will be able to keep up with the Q6700.
