Building a mid range budget gaming PC

   I am not sure if this is the right location to post this, but I need help building a PC for my girlfriend who's old laptop finally gave up trying to survive. We are both broke college students, but we both enjoy gaming, and so I am looking for a sweet spot machine that does not drive me into debt, but can actually run things on low to mid settings.

The problem is, I have not built a computer for 4 years, and so much has happened in the PC world that I feel like I do not have a good starting spot. 

I am hoping to get one for under 800, but the lower the better, if anyone can help get me going in the right direction, I would be very happy.
