1100.00 approx if you want Antec Lanboy case instead of CM Scout

This is where Joe can assist to squeeze a video card into your budget. I had a tough time picking one :).

Anyways I tried to give you a few ideas to think about. I look forward to seeing this system come together.

Have a great day

Hello Mattblunt608,

Welcome to AVA Forums!

As crpyt pointed out, you really want to focus on graphics card performance if that's the main use for the system. You can get away with a lesser performing processor, compared to the high end chips, as long as your graphics card is powerful enough to handle most games you throw at it. Your budget is a good start for a powerful gaming system, however I would highly consider increasing it to around $1100 if you want a graphics card that will help you go that extra mile and achieve high frame rates with Battlefield 3, with graphics settings maxed out, or any other new titles that will be released as you use your gaming system.

Here's the configuration I've put together, to give you even more options to consider:

  • INTEL Core™ i5-3450 Quad-Core 3.1 - 3.5GHz TB, HD Graphics 2500, LGA1155, 6MB L3 Cache, 22nm, 77W, EM64T EIST VT-x XD, Retail
  • MSI Z77MA-G45, LGA1155, Intel® Z77, DDR3-2667 (O.C.) 32GB /4, PCIe x16 SLI CF /1+1*, SATA 3Gb/s RAID 5 /4, 6Gb/s /2, HDMI + DVI + VGA, USB 3.0 /2, HDA, GbLAN, mATX, Retail
  • CRUCIAL 8GB (2 x 4GB) Ballistix Sport PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz CL9 1.5V SDRAM DIMM, Non-ECC
  • EVGA GeForce® GTX 560 SuperClocked (1461) 850MHz, 1GB GDDR5 4104MHz, PCIe x16 SLI, 2x DVI + mini-HDMI, Retail
  • SEAGATE 1TB Barracuda®, SATA 6 Gb/s, 7200 RPM, 64MB cache
  • RAID No RAID, Independent HDD Drives
  • SONY AD-7280S Black 24x DVD±R/RW Dual-Layer Burner, SATA, OEM
  • THERMALTAKE Lanbox Lite Black Compact Gaming Cube Case, mATX, No PSU, SECC Steel
  • THERMALTAKE TR2 500W Bronze Power Supply, 80 PLUS® Bronze, 24-pin ATX12V V2.3 EPS12V V2.91, 6-pin + 8/6-pin PCIe, Retail
  • CUSTOM WIRING Standard Wiring with Precision Cable Routing and Tie-Down
  • MICROSOFT Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition w/ SP1, OEM
  • GAMING PC Silver Warranty Package (3 Year Limited Parts, 3 Year Labor Warranty)

It comes out to about $1012, but that extra $88 could help you really maximize your options with this configuration. I have worked with many gamers who set stringent budgets, with no breathing room, to be disappointed later on that they did not allow that little extra to push their system to an acceptably enjoyable gaming experience. That little extra could hold you back from having an extra year or two out of the gaming system, in terms of keeping performance to par with the latest gaming titles.

As I mentioned previously, the graphics card is the most important in the configuration so I would look into investing that little extra into the graphics card, perhaps one of the new 600 series cards (GTX 670) since their price-to-performance is the best NVIDIA graphics cards has even been.

Oh yeah I really wanted to add a 600 series to the mix. Having one would make an awesome gaming box for them.

I just want to comment on Joe's configuration:

THERMALTAKE Lanbox Lite - we love this case. We have sold many of them that end up in a very hostile environments and the paint holds up very well. Build quality is amazing for the price, and despite the small form factor, it fits an 11 inch card, has room for multiple drives, and a very good airflow. In some cases we have added extra fans on the sides thanks to the added vents.

Also, the position of the power supply is very clever and has a indirect effect on cooling the CPU. Sitting right above the heatsink, it helps draft air and eliminate it as fast as possible, despite being very close to the heatsink.

The rest of the quote is great, pretty much best parts for the budget when going the Intel route. You will not be disappointed.

Love to see a GTX 680 in one of these rigs.

What chipsets would fit in these cases the Z77 and Z68 only?

This is a great learning experience for me

Hello Crypt,

mATX motherboards will fit in those cases, so chipset does not matter as long as the board size fits that requirement. :-)

Yes, a GTX 680 would be awesome; any graphics card that outputs heat in the rear would be preferred, due to the size limitations.

As mentioned earlier, the Lanbox ( VF6000BNS or VF6000BWS ) have vents on either side to help additional airflow. If you're installing a very powerful GPU and it does not get adequate cooling, it is always possible to add a 80-90MM fan(s) to the side of the case which should improve temperatures significantly.
We have actually done some testing on certain configurations that had the 560Ti card in them, and we were able to reduce the load temps by about 10-15C by adding a side 90mm fan.
Of course, as Joe mentioned, based on the heat output you may or you may not see any benefit in doing this. However it's good to know that the case is so versatile that if you do run into possible heat issues, you can remedy them by custom fan positioning.

Also, the rear dual fans can be turned around to blow air towards the CPU rather than outside of the case. This can sometimes provide additional cooling depending on the CPU heatsink design and the PSU fan that sits above it.
