    Posted: 04 Jun 2012 at 11:54am
Hello all, I have narrowed down what I am aiming for in my build.

Motherboard
Asus Z77 Sabertooth; I believe it is fast now, and somewhat future proof (at least for a few years).

Processor
INTEL i5-3570K Quad Core

Video Card
EVGA GeForce GTX 670 (will be playing mostly Diablo 3, but also have interest in StarCraft 2, the new SimCity when it releases, watching movies in true HD, and general Office programs and Internet browsing).

Memory
Crucial 8gb (2 X 4gb) 1600MHz; I believe this will be fast enough for what I need, and with the MoBo, have PLENTY of room for upgrading in the future.

Thermal Compound
Arctic Cooling MX-4; better safe than sorry? Or, is it necessary?

Cooling
Corsair H80 Hydro; if this is closed-loop, there is little maintenance and with general care, very little chance for punctures or defects, right?

Case
Cooler Master HAF X; why the hell not?! She's a beast!

SATA Hard Drive
Crucial 128gb M4 SSD (without transfer); with this machine being built for speed, it really seems like a no-brainer here.

Storage Device
Western Digital 500gb Caviar Blue; I may upgrade to a 1TB, just to be more future-proof, but not sure yet. Also, what is the difference between the Caviar Blue, Green, etc.?

Power Supply
Cooler Master Silent Pro M 850w; should be enough juice.

Considerations
Case Lighting; the Cooler Master HAF X comes stock with Red LED fans. I'm thinking why not? It's only $9.00, and with a case as beastly as this, why not show it off? But, I'd prefer blue; why is the Blue Edition so much more expensive?

Monitor; Asus VW246H. Is this a matte finish? Also, decent for gaming? I love the 2ms response time, and it is relatively cheap. Would this be good, or is there something better I can look into for <$200?

Security; any suggestions? I HATE Norton, I almost think that program is a virus in itself.

Coolant; if I decide to get a coolant color to accent to liquid cooler, can I do that? Or, are the hoses stock black and it will be too much trouble?

Compatibility; Is it known if all of these components will mesh properly and won't give me BSoD or registry errors?

SHIPPING FEE WAIVED? After taxes, this machine will push just under $2,000. I was just wondering, and hoping, that under any circumstance does AVA offer to waive shipping fees? The calculator estimates it to be roughly $50.

Conclusion
There you have it! I have done tons of research, asked hundreds of questions, and played with the configuration for months, and this is very close to what I would like to have in my rig. I am open to suggestions, as always!

Now just comes the pain-staking waiting game, but I'm so pumped!

BW85,

You've pretty much got it covered. Most of the questions have been answered in previous topics but I will be happy to address some of the additional ones:

Security:

We have a guide on our forum that you can refer to in order to make your system secure. It offers alternatives to Norton and depending on your browsing habits should be good protection.

Coolant: The hoses are not see-through and you would not be able to fill any other coolant. The hydro series come pre-filled and are not meant to be re-filled. Although they have low maintenance, they are still prone to leaks. Even though it's a very low percentage, we cannot rule out the possibilities.

You chose a great motherboard. Sabertooth series are known for good performance and plenty of features. And on top of all, they actually look good, which is hard to say for most motherboards nowadays. The color scheme may take some time to get used to, but in reality it's actually a very pretty motherboard. The chipset coolers are also very effective on top of being good looking.

Ah, thanks a lot, Vedran! I am pretty comfortable with the components, but am a little unsure on which case to cram it all into. I have been reading up on some other full-size towers. Do you know if AVA builders have had an issues with the HAF X? I have read many reports of holes not lining up correctly to place certain pieces. I have looked into the Antec DF-85, some Thermaltake cases, the Corsair Obsidian 650D (even though it's mid-size), and the Cooler Master Storm Trooper.

Would you happen to have any input? I'd like to have a window of some kind, with accent lighting for effects.

Hello BW85,

I can tell you from experience that the HAF series cases are fantastic, every single one. It really comes down to preference or size, design, and expandability. We have not had issues with mounting holes not lining up properly, so I doubt we would with your order should you decide on a HAF series case.

Antec, Thermaltake, and Corsair also manufacture some outstanding case designs. I feel if you stick within the realm of those four manufacturers, you cannot go wrong!

I love the HAF cases. I have the 912 myself. However, I don't think that they're the prettiest looking cases out there. Design department has a lot of work to do at Cooler Master. The reason I like them so much is that they're simple, very versatile (all kind of liquid cooling setups) and come with almost every imaginable brackets for installing things such as SSDs, Card readers, etc.

Is the HAF X hot-swappable? And correct me if I'm wrong, but that means I can easily switch in and out HDDs, right?

Hello BW85,

Yes, the Cooler Master HAF X hot swap functions are existent, and quite useful might I add. I've been using an external hot swap bay, and let me tell you, they're a hassle and quite inconvenient...even though I felt it would be easy to work with, it's a pain to constantly have to plug it in and constantly reconnect the eSATA cable.

The HAF X hot swap bay is located at the bottom of the 5.25 bays and has two removable bays, used as hot swap trays. There's a backplane that supports two hard disks, which connect into two SATA ports on the motherboard; supported with SATA II and III ports. The trays were only designed to work with 3.5 hard disks, so standard 2.5in SSD drives will not work, due to how the SATA power and data ports align in the hot swap tray. You also have to make sure that the motherboard supports hot-plug SATA connections, meaning you can disconnect and reconnect disks on the fly, without having to reboot the machine, and have the operating system recognize them in a plug-n-play environment. All current Intel chipsets support this feature in the BIOS, so you should be alright. Thumbs%20Up

Very good! So I should still have no problem using an SSD in the build, then? Also, how do we select the optional fan for the HAF X tower, the one that is at the top of the case?

Hello BW85,

Yes, using an SSD in your configuration will work wonderfully! Smile

If you want to add any fans to the case, just add it as aseparatee item in the cart, along with your configuration, and once you place an order you can contact us by phone or email with instructions on where you would like us to install it.

Awesome, thank you! I think I am a bit confused. I can see in the pull down where to add an additional CPU cooler, or upgrade the fan package, but with the HAF X in particular, it has 2 large exhaust fans on the top of the tower. However, only one comes stock with the tower, and there is the space for an optional second. Can ya guide me as to how to select the fan for the other location?

Also, what do you mean by configuration? As in we can customize where the fans go?

Hello BW85,

The HAF X case is a little more complex for fan packages, If you don't mind, you can call me after you place an order and we can go through it together and I will have the extra fan added!

I apologize if I confused you, some of these configurations can be quite complex. Confused

That would be great! And no worries, it was more-or-less the wording of Cooler Master that made it confusing, lol.

Hello BW85,

Understandable, I think they do that on purpose. Angry
