Currently looking at your computers and was wondering what the difference was. Prices seem to look about the same so why should I choose one over the other? Thx

Age_of_Bundar,
Ivy Bridge is the new chipset that was created to accommodate the third generation Intel sandybridge processors. Therefore by going the Ivy bridge route you're getting the latest technology available which means you'll be up to par in performance requirements for the latest software and hardware alike. Although the performance difference may not be significant to an average user, the fact that the third generation CPU's use much less power to run same processes indicates long term savings when it comes to your electrical bill. This low power consumption also allows the processors to run cooler therefore fans can be quieter, giving you both silence and performance in one package, which used to be very difficult to pull off in the past. However if you're the kind of user that just wants to purchase a desktop computer as soon as possible and you're able to get better deals on the previous generation CPU / chipset then by all means go for it because you will not be sacrificing much performance for the cost. If however, you're an avid PC user and want the latest and greatest, then the Ivy Bridge is the way to go at the moment.

it seems like Ivy Bridge didn't impress everyone with the same magnitude that 2nd gen did a year or so ago. Still.... I like the idea of the lower power consumption for same performance

Yeah, you will always have those individuals that are difficult to impress, or even convince to use the latest technology. I think that's partly why Intel releases new sockets or chipsets very close to current price ranges. Basically, it heavily entices you to consider the latest and greatest...
Clever, might I add.

I tend to look at things from performance perspective only. Initially, I wasn't impressed either, but looking at all these other features that came with including some serious energy savings was a win in my book.

Thanks everyone!
I had a second to speak with Jmundy on the phone today. I think the Z77 motherboard and Ivy Bridge processor will be useful for me. Asus Z77 motherboards have Asus smart cache technology, basically the intel smart cache technology with their own chipset built into it, and I think it will be great to use.
I also want to use my computer as an htpc somewhat, hooking it up to my LCD in my family room, so that should be neat.
