Hey guys, I wasn't sure where to put this topic, but I figured this thread got the most traffic. I am looking for a monitor, preferably less than $250 or so. It will be used primarily for gaming, but where I am not sure is LED or LCD. I know a faster response time is better, but some sites I have read said that GtG isn't that spectacular, but rather that other one (BtB, I think). But most response times are the GtG. Does anyone have a specific model, or brand, I should look at? The ones I have looked at so far are:

I think LCD is the safest way to go. Some users have reported input lag with LED Monitors, although not all of them. Joe could chime in on this a little since he's more familiar with it.
In my experience, usually the monitors without the extra features are the best ones. For example, things such as speakers are added to mark-up the monitor and sell it albeit lower quality then the competition. Therefore by keeping the extra features at a minimum, you focus mostly on the quality of the monitor. That's been my experience so far. Also, certain manufacturers have better "dead pixel" policies than others. It's suggested that you learn these before buying a specific monitor. Sometimes even 2-3 dead pixels on the screen is deemed acceptable by some companies and they won't let you return it. Make sure you're aware of this before buying a monitor, because it can be a pain to deal with if they happen to be in a spot where they're easily noticeable.

Thanks, Vedran. Would I be better off to buy a monitor physically, from a retail store, as oppose to purchasing one blindly over the internet?

Cheaper monitor definately local vs internet easier to return. Just my 2 cents :). As far as which one I'll let experts here respond. Edited by crypt - 12 Jul 2012 at 5:56pm |

I hear ya, lol. With my budget, I'm going for a higher end PC build while sacrificing a high-end monitor.

No worries, I didn't take offense to it! lol. I am also wondering how "high-end" of a monitor do I need if I will be playing games like WoW, D3, SC2, rather than TF2 or BF3 (the games that definitely have quicker motions than the games I will be playing).

Well, I actually haven't played it in 2 years, but will be getting back into it once I get my machine purchased, lol. It was pretty fun. I like the teamwork aspect of it, striving for better gear and just the social aspect of it. I tend to be more of an RPG'er than a FPS'er, though.
And for size, I would definitely like to stick in the 23-24" range. |

I'd like to keep it under $200. These are the side-by-sides from Newegg:

It's nice to buy locally if possible. Nothing beats the ability to simply walk into a store and handle a product before buying. Unfortunately it's not always possible. Sometimes you just have to rely on the reputation of the place you're buying from.

Thanks again, Vedran. If you have the time, and it isn't against AVA policy, would you be so kind as to check out Bestbuy.com and recommend me a monitor that is listed "In Store"? That is the only electronic retail store we have around my area, and sometimes I feel as if the associates don't fully understand how the products in their department works.
Case in point, I had one associate tell me they offered a product to convert my entire DVD collection to digital. A few weeks later I called because I had forgotten the name of the device, and this time the associate told me they didn't offer that product because it violated copyright laws. |

Hello BW85,
It's not against policy to help any one of our customer's out of courtesy. Besides, I know we've got you for life as an AVADirect customer, and even more so once you have a chance to use your system. :-) I heard a funny saying on a forum the other day. "Rule of thumb when speaking to a bbestbuy employee, don't listen to a bbestbuy employee". That being said, I would rather assist you and make sure you receive something you will ACTUALLY use, rather than being sold by some kid out of high school than doesn't know his rear from his elbow. Before I begin, can you please provide me with your zip code? I want to use it and track the store closest to you, so I may sure I recommend a model that is available at your local monitor. For displays, it's always best to visualize the image quality rather than taking a stab in the dark and hoping the specifications speak for themselves. Also, if you're a gamer, I'm going to recommend and LCD over an LED. LED displays have input lag issues, so that may become frfrustratinghile gaming for length periods of time. |

Thanks, Joe! My zip code is 61603. I would definitely prefer an LCD over an LED.

Thank you, sir!
They show a limited amount of monitors, for store purchase, online. The best I can see iss: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+18.5%26%2334%3B+Widescreen+Flat-Panel+LCD+Monitor+-+Black/9785647.p?id=1218174063096&skuId=9785647&st=LCD monitor&cp=1&lp=3 Generally speaking, I can tell you that ASUS monitors are a great deal for the price. So, if you see any in-store then definitely consider them! |

Thanks for your time, Joe! I stopped in the store yesterday, and while they did have one Asus, it was only 21.5" and LED. I think I may trust previous transactions and have them order the VW246H. It is $199.99, and I have nearly $70 saved in Best Buy Reward Zone dollars, which is going to help a ton (also why I am sort of stuck with getting a monitor from BB).

Hello BW85,
That's great to hear! I'm happy to help in any way I'm able. That's great about your rewards, then you definitely have to take advantage of them through the store credit you have accrued. |
