Hey guys, I've hit another wall with these HAF cases. Right now, I have an HAF X with a 670 FTW. My overall price is $1,833. The XM is cheaper by roughly $65. Do you think I should downsize and get more RAM? Of the two cases, does the HAF X still provide better overall cooling, or did Cooler Master make advancements with their design in the XM?

Hello BW85,
That actually all depends on your plans for the future...if eventually, you may end up with many components and added expansion cards in the future, then a larger case will be of no issue since there will be less ambient heat. However, if you plan to keep your system practically the same, minus a graphics card or RAM upgrade here or there, then you will want a smaller case. Controlling ambient heat in a smaller case is much easier than a larger...I'm actually facing that same issue with the wife's computer. She just HAD to have the Bitfenix Collusus case, and now her temperatures are all higher than when she had the "ugly" Apevia case I picked out for her...So, in essence, the smaller case will not only save you money, but the battle of ambient temperatures as well. I don't think there were many improvements over the Cooler Master HAF X, compared to the Cooler Master HAF XM. If anything, the Cooler Master HAF XM was released after the Cooler Master HAF X, so any improvement they so desired was most likely iimplementedinto the Cooler Master HAF XM, so you will basically receive the best of both worlds. |

Awesome. In all honestly, I don't see myself doing much to expand anything other than SLI a video card or add more RAM. I read a review with the X and XM. The X measures 9.1" x 21.7" x 23.2", while the XM is 9.9" x 20.9" x 22.8". If those measurements are accurate, the X has a volume of 2.65 cubic feet, while the XM has a volume of 2.73 cubic feet. I'm not entirely educated on how ambient temperatures work, but if they are easier to manage in a smaller case, wouldn't mathematically they be easier to manage in the X?
Also, why did your wife decide on the Collusus? I admit, the think looks awesome! But I've heard the cooling isn't that great. |

Oh yeah, also forgot to mention/ask. From time to time, I will be lugging this machine from the office to the big TV in the family room (when the fiancee leaves town and I stay behind). I know the HAF X has wheels, but does the XM have any the sort?

Hello BW85,
Technically, yes, the less volume the easier to control. Another important factor is how effective the cooling design is. They're both HAF cases, so the design cannot be all that different. The volume differences between the two is also not large enough to make a huge impact, going with one or the other. She literally chose the Collusus case because of the "cute wavy lines on the side!"...needless to say, she is now returning the case due to my eexplanationof "What is more important to you, the well-being of your components, or that it looks great while you fry them like an oomelet?". I'm happy she takes my advice when I give it. If you plan to move the case around on a decent basis, then I would opt for the X. The XM does not have any type of wheels to attach to the case. although you could modify the case to take them, but why work harder if you do not have to? |

Valid point, lol. A tour guide once told the group, "Don't stand when you can sit, and don't sit when you can lay down." It has stuck with me ever since, lol. Plus, I think the red ambiance of the fans and a light kit will light the corner of the room up quite nicely.
I have never been diagnosed with OCD, but I swear I have tendencies. It's either age, or the wealth of opinions and reviews on the internet that has made me this way, lol. |

Definitely! For those that say you're born with OCD, or any other compulsive order, are missing the point. Developing these issues, or as I call them "blessings", is very possible later in life...I think I'm right there with you, BW85.

It would be SO much easier if I go with my initial gut instinct and pick the HAF X. I plan on making the purchase probably that first week in September, which unfortunately is still a couple weeks of the back-and-forth research, lol.

Do either of the cases have an issue with static charges and rebooting or freezing? I have read some forums claim this because of all the metal. Not necessarily with these two cases in particular, just with CM cases and Antec in general.

Imo the case is the hardest part to decide on when building a new rig.

Dude, I have been going back and forth literally for weeks! There are so many things I like about the HAF X; the cooling, the 3.0 ports, the wheels. But, without quad-SLI or water or closed-loop cooling, I feel it's going to be TOO beastly - like using a UHaul to transport just a box of oranges.

She's into custom PC-ing and has an opinion of what she wants, I'd bet she's cool as hell, lol.

If ya wanna go halvsies on it, lol. Aesthetically, I like the look of the XM better, I'm not sure why. I'd probably end up getting the side window if I go with the XM, but the fact it doesn't come with wheels or a handle, and I don't want to custom-mount anything, is sort of a deter. I mean, lets face it, this thing is a full-size case.

I bet he'll grin once he gets caught up with this thread, lol.
Crypt, do you have any personal experience at all with either of these cases? I saw you had an open thread about custom-painting an HAF X. Are you thinking about getting one for yourself, or is it for someone else? |

Yes, grin I did, WOW!
Yeah, she's into custom PCs, but unfortunately I cannot get her to build one herself, despite her "building many PCs back in the day"...now that she has me, she's taking the lazy approach to it. Well, guess what, she WILL be re-building her PC this time! lol Actually, I've heard Lian Li cases have the static-reset issues, but no other cases (to my knowledge) have had an issue with it. I've only had these custom cases
Lian li PC 65B PC 75B
Lian Li 8nwx
Coolermaster Cosmos S
What I want is a case with 5 or 6 front bays. I'm going to use all front bays. So I was thinking X or 932 advanced. Had no exp with either I just decided on X.
