Hi I posted about 6 months ago but continued to use my old computer and now it is getting real old LOL, so I think I am ready.      $1250 is max with shipping for my budget and even that is pushing it.   I have always beleved the Video Card is the most important for your computer, so I picked out the 7870 I have a 23 inch moniter and plan on playing games at 1920 by 1080 and would like to play most of them (skyrim, guild wars 2, witcher 2) at max settings or high, I was thinking of getting the 6870 but dont know if I can play games at high with that.       I chose ati because I heard they run cooler and use less power and are quieter-is this true?   I found that a sound card makes a difference, do you have any recomendations?    Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello eddieg501,

Welcome back, we're happy to help you with your questions!

Correct you are; if you're using a custom desktop system for gaming, primarily, then the video card is going to be more important for you. The ASUS HD7870-DC2-2GD5, Radeon™ HD 7870 graphics card should easily allow you to play most games on high/ultra in a 1080p resolution. The latest demand for gaming calls for higher resolutions, so it no longer takes a great deal of graphics power to pump 1080p resolutions on max settings; although that can also depend on the specific title you are playing. Smile

ATI cards, from what I've read and seen, tend to run hotter and can be a bit noisy compared to NVIDIA cards. However, ASUS does not use a reference PCB design for their graphics cards, so this allows them to tweak the cooling solution on their cards to provide a lower-noise cooling solution that others, such as Sapphire, Diamond, etc... Here's a good reference to that statement: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/HD_7870_Direct_Cu_II/25.html

As you can see, ASUS cards allow for some awesomely acceptable noise levels for high-end cards, but even then it's still right on par with NVIDIA cards. If you prefer NVIDIA, but wanted a quiet solution, NVIDIA is still an acceptable choice by the provided numbers in the review.

Sound cards can make a great impact, however on-board HD audio is not capable of outputting 192KHz, so the CREATIVE X-Fi Xtreme Audio, 7.1 channels, 24-bit 96KHz sound card would be taking a step down. At this point, it's only worth upgrading the sound card to a 192KHz supported model, or stick with the on-board sound.

The COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M 700W power supply is quiet, but there's also other brands to consider if you seek a silent solution. Seasonic, for one, offers the most quiet power supplies in existence. Then, there's also Corsair and Antec. I would recommend either three, before considering a Cooler Master power supply...that's from my own experience.

Feel free to post additional questions!

thank you for your feed back,  I will check out those other components you describe. The only thing I am not sure about is the sound card, I have found that the integrated sound is muddy even with the latest drivers,  I used an xtreme creative 96khz 24 bit  for about 60 bucks in my last computer and was blown away with the sound, maybe it is because you can shape the base and shape surround sound which you cannot do with realtech (no surround sound), Thanks for your advice and I will get back to you.

Hello eddieg501,

On-board sound has come a long way. I use on-board Realtek sound outputs on my ASUS board (P8P67-M) and receive a 192KHz signal, complete with an equalizer to shape and shift the frequency. I used a Creative Xtreme Audio 7.1 card and it sounded worse, so I decided to stick with the on-board sound for now...I'm looking into an HT Omega card soon, the mother of all sound cards!

You could always try the on-board sound at first. If you don't like it, adding a sound card is a snap.

Hello eddieg501,

Just to add to Joe's post, he's absolutely correct. Onboard audio has come a long way and the processing by the CPU is no longer as intensive as it was on the older chips. CPU's nowadays can handle onboard audio without breaking a sweat, making the sound card obsolete for basic audio needs

However, if you consider yourself an audiophile and you want that extra quality not found in the onboard chips, then getting a soundcard capable of 192kHz (or higher) is recommended.

Some people purchase sound cards not for audio quality alone, but also multitude of ports that allows them to plug in different audio equipment for media editing and composition.

If you don't see yourself using these features and only needing the basic audio that supports multi-channel speaker setup, then most onboard audio chips will work for you.

Let us know if you have any other questions. Otherwise, your configuration looks superb!

Hi guys, in this I go with 3 different configurations all for about the same price, the 3rd has a 256 SSD but only a 6870 card, what do you think, is the ssd going to make my games faster or just internet browsing? I am a little worried about only 256 gig because I have a lot of games and do not want to be taking them off and on due to DRM restrictions. I am ready to order, just let me know your thoughts

eddieg501,

At this point in time HD 6870 is quite outdated. It has been passed by not only the 69xx series, but the new 7xxx generation as well. In a great build such as this one, it would become a bottleneck very quickly.

As far as SSD, it will make a great improvement to your gaming experience. Games load faster, save faster and manage data faster. After you've played games on an SSD for a while and you go back to standard HDD or something like a PS3 or an Xbox360, you would think something is wrong because of how long the load times will be.

If you have a lot of games, best way to manage them is to have another HDD, approximately around 1TB. You can use this drive as backup for games, or your entire SSD. 256GB will be enough to load programs and a couple of games you play at that moment. All extras can be saved on the 1TB drive and moved over when needed without deleting them.

Hello Eddieg501,

We're very happy to have you! I personally cannot wait to hear your feedback on the machine. There are others on the forum that walked the same forum-path as you have, and I'm sure they would be happy to share their experiences with you.

Graphics heaven, eh? You did obtain quite the powerful graphics card. Do you have any particular titles in mind, or will you be using the system for visual editing of the sort? I'm playing Darksiders II at the moment (plagued with bugs, but worth dealing with due the the awesome storyline) then it's Sleeping Dogs...OH, and I completely forgot about Borderlands 2...my life, as I know it, is gone for the next few months, because then there' Assassins Creed III...LAWLZ

Also, despite the warranty AVADirect provides, make sure you register your graphics card with the manufacturer. They usually provide excellent perks, such as an extended warranty, contest admission, or even free stuff from time to time.

Hi Joseph:
Well on my old machine I played Skyrim, Witcher 2, Batman and Deus ex but was never able to crank it beyond medium, so I look forward to playing those on Ultra, I look forward to playing Guild wars 2, The Secret World,Arma 3 and the Walking Dead. I am also looking to replay Mass effect 3 with the extended ending. I have never seen Directx 10 or 11, so it will be interesting to see how those change the graphic appearance. I will make sure to register my card with the Manufacturer, thanks for the tip.

crypt,

There is a time limit. EVGA allows up to 30 days after purchase to register the card.

Hello eddieg501,

You're welcome, that's what we're here for!

Wow, if you were only able to play games like Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 on medium settings, wait until you see the on Ultra. Those two titles aren't the best of examples, since they're built on DirectX 9 anyway, but you should check out games like Metro 2033, Max Payne 3, The Witcher 2, and Deus Ex: Human revolution; all of which use Directx 11 so you will see the most noticeable differences with those titles. With the added video RAM, you will have increased ability to use features like Anti-aliasing and Anisotropic features without choking down the framerate of the game. These features add finer detail from textures at a distance, and reduce edgy lines to create more of a smooth-looking environment. Overall, I think you will be more than pleased with what your new computer will do for your gaming. Smile

Just want to let you know my new computer is playing perfectly, with my 7870 ati card I can play most games on ultra with the exception of witcher 2, metro 2023 which I had to go with High settings which are still very good. The computer is running perfectly, and is much quieter than my older computer which was not nearly as powerful!  The only thing I regret is not having the cpu overclocked but I was afraid it would damage my computer, on the other hand I bought the top of the line I5 quad core so it is pretty good, although I may try and overclock it. Thanks again, Do you have any advice about overclocking?

I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying your system, which is playing games perfectly! That ATI 7870 graphics could should be able to pump out some excellent frame rates on high-to-extreme settings. It will vary; depending on the game and how well the development studio designed it to handle graphics cards (most development studios build the graphics engine in favor of NVIDIA or ATI graphics cards).

I'm happy to hear the system is also much quieter for you. You have the advancement in PC components to thank for that, as they tend to become less noisy as they are improved per year, and also our production department, for ensuring your components were assembled optimally for performance and noise levels. There's no sense in building a PC if you don't build it right.

Overclocking is a toss-up, and unless applications really use a CPU fully, then it will make a minimal difference. If you go the extreme route, then you may notice large difference in performance, but mild overclocks usually don't get you very far outside of bragging that your CPU is overclocked, stable, and cool.

If you want to dabble with overclocking a bit, keep in mind that it's at your own risk, but the motherboard BIOS should have some auto-overclock features for you to take advantage of. Remember, anytime you make changes make them in very, very small increments. That last thing you want to do is boost your CPU multiplier, or voltage, and damage the CPU without a way to revert back. Every time you create an overclock, make sure you save the settings using the profile option before applying any changes. This way, you are able to revert back to the previous settings without any large headaches involved.

As always, feel free to post on the forum if you have any questions or thoughts you wish to share!
