This was posted on another web forum, it looks like a good solution for the hd 4850 heat concern (well at least my concern).

Does it look like avadirect can add to my configuration?

Here's the link to the product:

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0208848

And I guess another possible solution would be to wait for the new asus gpu which will have a custom heatsink fan.

Here's the link:

http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=2&l2=8&l3=725&l4=0&model=2314&modelmenu=1

Actually my question concerning the asus gpu is "does anyone know when it will be available?"

GeezerinCT,

I see a problem with that slot cooler.  That slot cooler seems very loud and will only take heat out of the case.  You need to be able to cool the GPU and that takes more air to be pushed over the GPU.

So then you do need a custom heatsink fan.  But now the problem is that these sometimes take up as much as 3 slots for some of these custom solutions, and you may lose too many expansion slots.

As to when it will be available, we are unable to find out any extra info from ASUS.  During the coming days we may have some updated info.

Thanks Matt for the quick reply.

I really would like to configure my pc with one of the new ati gpus but  i've seen where imo the cards temps are too high.

I know they're enginered to run hot but I just can't believe all that heat would be good for the other components of the pc, but then again i'm a pc noob Smile.

And the nvidia cards are expensive and I was having second thoughts about them but I might just go with them.

Since nvidia is planning a dx10.1 update of their new gpus early next year, maybe it would be better to stick with an older generation i.e. 8800gts and upgrade in a few months

Have you checked out this cooler?
I've heard it does a good job while still allowing space for dual card setups.
There is also the point that you can drastically reduce the heat by speeding up the stock fan on the 4850.For some reason,ATI set the speed at 15%.There's a simple workaround for this,a few lines of text in a profile in the Catalyst Command Center program, that allows you to speed it up.At 40 to 50%,people are reporting very acceptable temps.

Hello Gojira,

I'm so glad you inquired about this cooler! We just added it to our website today. Many reviews show promising results, and as you mentioned, will still allow adequate room for dual cards. We will gladly install this third-party cooler, with any system that is included with it's purchase.

Kind Regards,
