There's a growing rumor Nvidia will stop producing motherboard chipsets.

What does not make sense is that NVidia said that SLI will not work on the new Intel X58 chipsets unless their nForce 200 chips were on the board.
NVidia has not licensed out their SLI technology to any other company. If they were to stop producing their own chipsets, NVidia sales would take a drop in the short and long run due to no SLI.
NVidia needs to find a way to have a multi-GPU solution that is chipset independant, much like CrossFire from AMD.

The writer of that article, "Charlie", has been lately seen as a NVidia basher. You have to take what he says with a grain of salt. I have found a much more reliable source that explains the issue more clearly.

Yes,if it had been the Inquirer that had brought up the issue,I wouldn't have given it much credence,"Charlie" definitely has an ax to grind with Nvidia. But they do have some potentially big problems on the horizon as far as SLI and the upcoming new Intel platforms are concerned.

A large amount of the yields of the 700 series boards are complete failures and this is costing them greatly.
