Over at Xtremesystems a few users have said that their high quality sound cards, along with a few frames per second, seemed to give them a smoother gaming experience as opposed to onboard sound.

Have you guys experienced this? I'm already getting a sound card, was just wondering if this was true

It is possibly true.  However, many of our gaming systems do not come with sound cards so I have not personally seen this.  However, I can vouch that the Killer Nic networking card does indeed raise FPS by a small amount as well, so maybe the same holds true for sound cards as well.
