That technology is years old. What they are using is a technology called Phase Change Cooling. Basically a refrigerent liquid goes to CPU, and via an expander, expands to a gas. This change of phase (phase change cooling) can carry away massive amounts of heat away from the CPU.
This however is the first ever commercially available in-case solution. There have been out-of-case solutions years ago, but they were quite bulky. Also, this system does not cool as well as the external or home-built systems. I have seen Phase Change coolers cool to as low as -80 degrees C, while this unit only cools to about +20 C
However, at $900 per external unit, it was quite expensive. My guess is that the Xaser + Phase Change will be MSRP at $1000, as the Xaser itself is a $300+ case alone.
However, after all the research into the pre-builts, we will be expanding our research into other areas as well, hopefully including Phase Change as well. I was hoping we too could create our own units and fit them inside a case as well.

Those devices were first reviewed as "The wave of the future" , but the future of PC's in my minds eye does not include condensation build up with an end result of my system smoking and sparking....They still have much work to do until the stamp of approval :-)

Wow, tough bunch. Phase change has never really been advertised as the wave of the future. Actually I take that back, in the 1930's vapor-compression was hailed at "the wave of the future" and it was, we all have it in our homes.
A company a couple of years ago made a big to do about their air conditioned server racks but honestly how much fuss could a server rack company make?
Phase change for the personel computer started around 10 years ago with the VapoChill hit the market. Prices haven't changed much since then, around 900 USD will get you a cutting edge phase change unit.
I was looking around on line to see what everyones first impressions were of the Xpressar. Just like the OCZ Cryo-Z I have the first Xpressar released to the media and have been playing with it a little today.
The MSRP is 749 and that comes with the case.

I would love to but will not get a chance to play with it again until later tonight. I have ran a couple of tests but need to go back and double the coupling of the evap and the processor. I will pop in later on tonight. Till then I will leave you with this:

Sorry guys, I am not going to get a chance to break free tonight. Hopefully I will get more time tomorrow. I have a lot of i7 testing to get finished up before Monday.
BTW - you guys should get an i7 system over to me for review.

It is always difficult to be the first with a product. Second guessing yourself every step of the way, did I miss something? I am convinced now that I have covered my bases with the Xpressar. Let me put it like this.
A couple of years ago Dell had a thing going for the highest 3DMark score. The top prize was a new 30 inch monitor. I broke out my Mach II GT, the best phase change cooler on the market that is not hacked together by one of the guys from Xtreme Systems, capable of cooling 200 watts.
I used an Intel QX6700 and nForce 680i board and was able to run between 4.0 and 4.2. This was outside with snow on the ground, Danger Den water blocks that lead to a radiator, in a cooler filled with snow and water. On top of that a box fan was purchased so I could blow 8C air into the system and phase change radiator.
I took second (a 27 inch LCD) and a guy that would later work for me won.
The point is that even with all of that the processor couldn't go much past 4.0, what I would consider a good overclock at the time. Here we are two years later, with a really good overclocking X48 board and the Xpressar was not able to get the chip stable past 3.2 GHz. The temps at 3.2 were actually the same as or worse than the ThermalTake MaxORB air cooler.

I am still testing i7 965 chips but from what I saw over the couple of days, I can't recommend ANY comercial phase change systems with i7. This includes the Mach II GT and everything else you can order over the counter. There are custom builders in the Xtremesystems forums who can make better phase change coolers that can be tuned for i7 loads but i7 is just too much for anything that is not a "one off". Oh i meant modern phase change coolers. And from what I've seen on XS there are some great results with Core i7!!! basically stock voltages, and they hit 4ghz on air with the 965. Depending on the results of the i940 i might get that and save myself 400 dollars :)

Core i7 scales very well but as soon as you start adding voltage the temps get crazy!
The 940 chips seem pretty good, the E6600 of today.

Also, I am on a crazy water cooling loop right now with 4x120mm fans and can't hit 4.0 with stock voltage. It needed a little boost.

I wish you luck. I'm curious as how high AVA can overclock core I7, i'm debating on whether to get a i965 or not, 400 dollars is a big difference. And as of now i have all the money i need to buy a new pc :) Chris have you seen Thermalrights Core i7 TRUE? Or Noctuas new one? Seems like the cooling would be better, and quieter |
