Is heat really a problem for hard drives?
I've seen some other boutiques offer hard drive cooling, although I haven't seen heat mentioned as a problem for hard drives anywhere. |

Most high quality cases use a specialized HDD bays with fans already added to have the best cooling possible. This will keep the HDDs at an acceptable temperature.
There are also HDD heatsinks and fans that you can add to improve the cooling, but we really never saw a need for this. It also requires the usage of a 5.25" slot per HDD, and these cooling devices can be expensive.
If your case comes with one of these fan-cooled HDD bays, you are already set.

I've heard of hard drives dying a lot, and yes my case is already cooled, but i'd like a heatsink. They're only around 30 dollars, it'd give make me less nervous :)

standard 7200 rpm hard drives dont create a lot of heat. you should
have at least a fan under them (the way most cases are configured) there is no need to put heat sinks on them. most have a lable on the top wich doesnt conduct heat well anyway. besides they are not made of aluminum or copper so you wont get good heat conduction anyway. the only time you really need to worry about hd heat is if you have very high speed drives like 15k rpm scsi drives. they will burn up in hours with no air.
