What x79 MB would you pick for 64 gb of this memory. Is this memory kit more tricky to maintain vs Ares (10-10-10) 64 GB kits. If your not into OCing is that and issue with either of these kits?crypt2014-03-26 09:19:44

I would definitely pair any of the following boards with that RAM:

    1) Asus Sabertooth
    2) Asus Rampage IV
    3) MSI X79A series
    4) Gigabyte GA-X79 series

Any of those would be excellent candidates. As for the RAM comparison, at 1600Mhz there will be no obvious difference. However, RipJaws have a much higher ceiling, tested at 2400mhz give extra room if you want to overclock the memory.

    I won't OC memory

On a side note using this as my hotswap boot drive with 960 gb ssd works good

That's a pretty interesting setup. How often would you say you perform the swaps, per day or per week?

I just wanted to see how this hotswap would function. Its hard to say how much slower this setup is vs having ssd installed internally. without having two exact machines side by side.

I do think it does very good job. It would allow me to use 3.5 hard drives or ssd. I can make master boot drive and a backup boot drive and if I screw up something I can restore my rig in an instant.

    1. Main SSD for office etc

    2. Game SSD just for games

    3. I can use a HD for test or learning stuff

    4. SSD for video clips photoshop aftereffects type things on own drive

I won't test mega hot swapping with this system because its my main hard wired system rather leave it be. I'd prefer doing that test on a wireless rig to be built in near future. Yes I will be doing a hotswap rig again I'm happy with the results so far.

My mom passed away in Feb too I have had alot of stuff to deal with as well so its harder to test play etc right now.crypt2014-03-26 12:31:12

Those are very sad news, please accept my deepest condolences...

On a brighter note, I don't think you'll see much degradation in performance, but it would be interested to measure side by side with an identical drive.

I know alot of customers care about boot up speed so this kind of setup they wouldn't want. My guess without side by side test is 2 to 3 secs max slower which as long as it functions that's cool by me. It gives you options on the fly.

    Thanks for the Condolencescrypt2014-03-26 12:47:13
