Suggestions for All-in-One-PC Configuration

Hello,

I have an iMac at the office (3.1GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 (i7-4770S), 16 GB ram, 256 GB Flash storage) and it perfectly suits my needs. However, I also work from home half the week and I am in need of a comparably high performance all in one due to the tiny work area I have.  I generally do heavy Photoshop, Illustrator, and In Design work. I frequently work with ultra high res image files with files being bigger than 100 MB. Some individual design files can be even up to 5 GB. I also frequently use Excel for extensive data analysis.

Therefore, I was thinking of building the ECS G24 All in One (http://www.avadirect.com/Configure/8100390).  I was thinking about doing the following configuration:

Processor: INTEL Core™ i7-4790S Quad-Core 3.2 - 4.0GHz TB, HD Graphics 4600, LGA1150, 8MB L3 Cache, DDR3-1600, 22nm, 65W, EIST HT VT-x XD, Retail

RAM: DDR3-1333 SODIMM Memory: CORSAIR 16GB (2 x 8GB) Vengeance® PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz SDRAM SODIMM, CL10, 1.5V, Non-ECC

Storage Drive: SAMSUNG 1TB 850 Pro Series SSD, Samsung MEX, 550/520 MB/s, SATA 6 Gb/s, 2.5-Inch 7mm, Retail

Is this too much power for the all in one? Can the CPU Fan and system Fan that come with this kit support such power? Will this processor lead to overheating? Is the Samsung storage drive robust? I need power plus great reliability. Any suggestions would be helpful

Thanks so much.

    Hello andylewisdabomb,

Overall, the configuration you put together is pretty sound, so I don't have any recommendations on what you can do to improve it. Anything else (such as storage space) is a matter of personal preference, so I would choose the capacity which you feel will last a majority of the machines use for you.

The only remaining question, is if the Intel Integrated Graphics will be enough to power through the extent of your photoshop use. The only comparison I would conduct, would be 4790s benchmarks vs your MAC's processors and graphics performance.

You can use this review as a solid metric.

If the CPU's raw performance, combined with the integrated graphics, are enough to satisfy your level of expect performance, then you have nothing left to consider. :-)

    Hello Jmundy,

Thanks for your advice. In the end, do you think the Asus Q87T/CSM motherboard can handle my configuration with no qualms? I don't ever play games so it will be mostly for flat design work. I want to build an AIO that can last me about 3 years with no stability issues. Just want to make sure that the motherboard can handle that i7-4790S processor without any burn outs.

    Thanks again

    Hello Andy,

The Asus Q87T/CSM is actually the only board we recommend for that specific all-in-one unit, and it's a rock-solid board. That being said, I think you are good to go, and it can definitely handle the system and processor as specified!
