Is VR Gaming Worth it in 2022?

Virtual Reality

What is VR Gaming?

VR gaming was such a hot topic a while back. It was the future. Well, is that still the case in 2022? I personally think we have awhile to go to achieve true virtual reality, however, that does not mean it is not worth it these days. It all depends on what you are using it for – gaming or enterprise? What headset you are purchasing, what games you are playing, the space you have to play, and so much more.

What is a good VR Gaming Headset?

I believe the experience will be as good as the headset you buy. I would not cheap out on a headset if you are looking to get into VR gaming as there are more cons than pros. The resolution might not be as good, not adjustable headgear, etc. Screen door effect as well, but that was more prominent in the early prototypes (devkits). If you went with something such as the Valve Index, you are going to be set for a great time, especially with their controllers for the headset.  This headset still does require a base station, unlike the Oculus Quest 2, which allows you to play VR without a headset!

Best VR Games to play on PC

Well, Beat Saber still reigns as an essential if you purchase a VR headset.  As someone who has always enjoyed musical games such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and DJ Hero I was beyond thrilled that this game was right up my ally when I first played it. The modding you can do to Beat Saber is top tier as well, mostly for the endless number of songs you can download to play. Outside of that essential game, it really all boils down to what you are into. I recently stumbled across the game “Compound” and was instantly in love. It is a roguelike title but set in a pixel-based university. It is like the original Doom, but not as gory and demonic. I had a blast with the guns you were given, not knowing what was going to great me in the next level. It was a fun experience. You also have classics like Skyrim and Fallout 4 VR editions that are fun, however I still prefer the traditional experience for those games.

Best Oculus Rift VR games to play on PC

There are some exclusive titles for the Oculus Quest 2 and I am extremely disheartened that we have exclusives within the VR world. However, I digress. The one title I want to talk about is, well, if you know me then you will know what game I am talking about….

Resident Evil…. 4 (VR)

I was so excited when I saw this was getting a VR port, but then cried when I saw it was a quest exclusive. Not only is this one of my favorite titles in the franchise, but it was also the first title I put as much time into for a Resident Evil. This game was a turning point for the franchise. Some people say this is where the true horror of Resident Evil started to fade away, and I can agree with that, but it is still a banger of a game. I have not had the chance to play this game in VR, but I have watched tons of game play and spoke to people who have played it. I will continue to live vicariously through them.

Best free things to do in VR

VR is not only for gaming though. There are some great free educational applications that function as games that are fun. Walking on the International Space Station in VR is cool, and you can really immerse and put yourself in the astronauts’ shoes. Microsoft Flight Simulator is fun to play with a VR headset as well. Businesses have also developed private applications for training and simulation purposes, as well. I have been lucky enough to try those applications, and they are top-notch and innovative.

How to buy a VR Ready Gaming PC?

Whether you are a long-time user of VR or a new user, I personally think that VR is still very much worth it in 2022. J  As I stated in the beginning, we have a long way to go to truly achieve virtual reality at its peak, but for the time being I feel that it is in a great spot.
