We had the pleasure of working with the customer extensively for the build, and large storage servers have become more common based on current demand for storage. This client needed an easy solution for their storage needs, but also needed server to be performance oriented. Usually, large RAID arrays can cause any system to lose CPU cycles, thus lowering performance. The only way to prevent this problem is by adding a hardware-based RAID controller, with on-board RAM, to assume control over the RAID array and handle it independently. The 3WARE RAID controller was a perfect candidate, considering the 512MB of DDR3 RAM, and it’s large amount of SATA ports to future expansion. This allows the end-user to use more of the processors capabilities, and also saves the system from using the 16GB of system RAM. Combine this setup with Open-E storage software and you have a well-oiled machine ready to keep your data safe, and the system’s performance optimal.
