Frequent crashes and system instability can often be caused by bad or corrupt drivers. In this guide, you will learn how to properly remove system drivers and then re-install them, which should resolve crashing problems related to drivers.
Driver Sweeper is no longer active and has been replaced by Driver Fusion. The program is slightly different but it performs the same task.
Step 1 - Obtaining the program
You may download DriverSweeper at the following link:
Once downloaded, install the program on your computer.
Step 2 - Removing the driver
You're still going to use Windows Device Manager to remove the drivers first. Once that's complete, you can then use DriverSweeper to remove any extra files.
To remove a driver in Device Manager, follow these steps:
1) Left click on Start
2) Right click on Computer > Choose Manage
3) Highlight Device Manager
4) On the Right side, expand the device category which you would like to uninstall e.g Display Adapters
5) Right click on the device (e.g Nvidia GTX 580) and choose uninstall.
6) If you're prompted with a checkbox to remove driver software as well, please check the box and press OK.
At this point, driver is removed. In order to use DriverSweeper, you must restart your computer and boot windows into Safe Mode.
Step 3 - Booting into Safe Mode / Running the program
To boot Windows OS into safe mode, you must press the F8 key before Windows begins to load. Some motherboards will also respond to this input giving you boot menu choices. If this happens, select the hard drive that your Windows OS is installed on and press enter, immediately followed by pressing the F8 key again.
If you've done this correctly and in the allocated time, you will see a menu of different boot choices. Choose Safe Mode only.
Once the system is back to desktop, run DriverSweeper.
Select the appropriate driver to look for: For example, if you uninstalled display driver for an Nvidia adapter, select Nvidia - Display. If you uninstalled audio driver for Realtek adapter, choose Realtek.
Press OK to reboot machine when prompted.
You can let windows boot normally this time. Once in Windows, install the newly downloaded driver.
